Rewild is excited to announce a two-day workshop dedicated to the vital topic of Mangrove Restoration, taking place at the Nayarambalam Panchayath Hall. This workshop is free and open to all, making it a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in environmental conservation, especially students and young enthusiasts.
Workshop Schedule
Day 1: Understanding Mangroves
- An Introduction to Mangroves
Speaker: Dr. Rani Varghese, Post Doctoral Fellow, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies
Dr. Varghese will kick off the workshop with an insightful introduction to mangroves, focusing on their ecological significance and the role they play in climate change mitigation. Her current project, “Sustainable use of blue carbon from the mangroves in relation to climate change mitigation for the state of Kerala,” highlights the importance of these unique ecosystems in our fight against climate change. - Identification of Mangroves
Speaker: Dr. Preethy C.M., Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT)
Following Dr. Varghese, Dr. Preethy C.M. will delve into the identification of various mangrove species. With her expertise in environmental microbiology, Dr. Preethy is engaged in research on bioremediation of toxic pollutants and antimicrobial resistance in the Periyar River system. Her knowledge will provide participants with the skills to recognize and understand the different types of mangroves and their ecological roles. - Eco Restoration General Practices
Speaker: IB Manoj, Founder of Rewild
On the second day, IB Manoj, a well-known environmentalist and founder of Rewild, will share general practices for eco-restoration. With a remarkable history of cultivating a thick forest around his home in Edavanakkad, Vypeen Island, Manoj brings a wealth of practical experience to the workshop. His insights will empower participants to engage in effective restoration efforts in their own communities. - Ecosystem services of mangroves
Speaker: Dr. Rani Varghese. Mangroves are vital coastal ecosystems that protect shorelines from erosion, act as significant carbon sinks, and support diverse wildlife. This session will explore their sustainable management and role in climate change mitigation. Dr. Rani Varghese’s research will highlight innovative strategies for harnessing blue carbon from mangroves, emphasizing their importance for coastal resilience and livelihoods in Kerala and beyond.
Day 2: Practical Applications and Field Visit
- Mangrove Field Visit
Guide: K.K. Reghuraj, Retired Farm Superintendent, KUFOS
The workshop will culminate in a hands-on field visit led by Mr. K.K. Reghuraj, a retired Farm Superintendent from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS). With a long and distinguished career in managing farm operations, Mr. Reghuraj possesses deep knowledge about mangroves in Kerala, making him an invaluable resource for participants. They will have the opportunity to explore mangrove ecosystems in their natural habitat, applying what they’ve learned in a practical setting under his expert guidance.

Workshop Motives
The primary goals of this workshop are to:
- Create Awareness: One of the key objectives is to inspire the younger generation, particularly students, about the importance of mangroves and their role in our environment. By fostering a deeper understanding of these ecosystems, we hope to cultivate a sense of responsibility and stewardship among participants. Engaging young minds in discussions about biodiversity, climate change, and the ecological services provided by mangroves can ignite a passion for environmental conservation that lasts a lifetime.
- Demonstrate Good Practices: The workshop aims to showcase effective mangrove restoration techniques and general restoration practices that can be applied in local communities. Participants will learn about the various methods of planting, maintaining, and monitoring mangrove ecosystems, as well as the importance of community involvement in these efforts. By demonstrating successful case studies and best practices, we hope to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to restoration projects in their own areas. This hands-on approach will empower participants to take action and make a tangible difference in their environments.
Why Attend?
This workshop is not just an educational experience; it’s a chance to connect with experts in the field, engage with like-minded individuals, and contribute to the vital cause of mangrove restoration. Whether you are a student, a nature enthusiast, or someone looking to make a difference, this workshop is for you!
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn and make a positive impact on our environment. We look forward to seeing you at the Nayarambalam Panchayath Hall!
